Antiglitches in accreting pulsars from superfluid vortex avalanches

چکیده

Three sudden spin-down events, termed `anti-glitches', were recently discovered in the accreting pulsar NGC 300 ULX-1 by \textit{Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer} (NICER) mission. Unlike previous anti-glitches detected decelerating magnetars, these are first recorded an accelerating pulsar. One standard theory is that spin-up glitches caused avalanches of collectively unpinning vortices transfer angular momentum from superfluid interior to crust a neutron star. Here we test whether vortex also consistent with ULX-1, reversed. We perform $N$-body simulations up $5 \times 10^{3}$ pinned two dimensions secularly and containers. Vortex routinely occur both scenarios, propagating inwards outwards respectively. The implications for observables, such as size waiting time statistics, considered briefly.

Observations of accreting pulsars

We summarize five years of continuous monitoring of accretion-powered pulsars with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory. Our 20–70 keV observations have determined or refined the orbital parameters of 13 binaries, discovered 5 new transient accreting pulsars, measured the pulsed flux history during outbursts of 12 transients (GRO J1744–28, 4U 01...

Vortex nucleation in superfluid

W F Vinen suggested in 1961 that the creation of quantized vortex line in superfluid 4He is impeded by an energy barrier. Measurements of the rate ν at which negative ions nucleate vortices in isotopically pure 4He have vindicated this idea. Barrier heights derived from the measured temperature dependence of ν are in good agreement with values calculated by Muirhead, Vinen and Donnelly (MVD) on...

The Physics of X-ray Emission from Accreting Millisecond Pulsars

By analyzing the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data on SAX J1808.4−3658, we show that the X-ray emission in accretion powered millisecond pulsars can be produced by Comptonization in a hot slab (radiative shock) of Thomson optical depth τes ∼ 1 at the neutron star surface. The escaping radiation consists of two components: a black body and a hard Comptonized tail. These components have very diffe...

Superfluid Vortex Nucleation

In an earlier paper 2] the author introduced a nonlinear Schrr odinger model for superruid that captures the process of mutual friction between the super-uid and normal uid components of helium II. Topological defects in the solution of this equation are identiied as superruid vortices, and in that paper, an asymp-totic dynamics for the vortices was derived in the case they are widely separated...

Modeling pulse profiles of accreting millisecond pulsars

I review the basic observational properties of accreting millisecond pulsars that are important for understanding the physics involved in formation of their pulse profiles. I then discuss main effects responsible for shaping these profiles. Some analytical results that help to understand the results of simulations are presented. Constraints on the pulsar geometry and the neutron star equation o...
